One of the papers employed the recent Children of European Immigrants Study which has a verbal measure of cognitive skills and detailed region of origin and demographic data for England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

People tend to search for evidence that will confirm their existing beliefs while also ignoring or downplaying disconfirming evidence. This confirmation bias (Nickerson, 1998) is widespread among both laypeople and scientists (Ioannidis, 2012). It is extremely difficult to avoid confirmation bias in everyday reasoning; for example, courses in “critical thinking” temporarily suppress confirmation bias, but do not eliminate it (Lilienfeld, Ammirati, & Landfield, 2009). Even research communities of highly intelligent and well-meaning individuals can fall prey to confirmation bias, as IQ is positively correlated with the number of reasons people find to support their own side in an argument, and is uncorrelated with the (much lower) number of reasons people find to support the opposing argument (Perkins, Farady & Bushey, 1991).

Thanks. Unimpressive scores for faculty at a top university. No one scores really high (not sure what the ceiling is on the WAIS though). They used the original 1955 US norms, so, if anything, the scores are inflated by the Flynn effect unless the UK was behind the US in Flynn gains.

Is there perhaps some ceiling effect pushing the mean downwards? I think the ceiling on standard WAIS is 145, making it impossible for anyone to get higher than that.

The correlation between Roe's 3 tests (V,S,M) was near zero, so hard to judge how much they measured g. My bet is that the Spatial test was the most accurate, and with a median of 137 (uncorrected for FE) it is not too far from the estimate of the Cambridge study.
Roe's study was on older researchers considered to be "eminent scientists." The Cambridge study included only younger faculty, probably mostly graduate teaching assistants or the like. I would expect the former to score much higher. Even so, it's surprising that, for example, the Cambridge physics department would employ someone with an IQ of 112 and no one above 136.
